SEJAHTERA & ROLE OF UNIVERSITIES IN SDG

Image
Assalamualaikum,  In the third session of class, we learned about the relationship between Sejahtera and role of universities in SDG.  In general, this topic discusses the definition of Sejahtera, which is very much related to this topic. Besides, it also explains the participation of the university in Sustainable Development. As university students, most of the issues mentioned in this chapter are relevant to our daily lives. Sejahtera is a meaningful Bahasa Malaysia's word as directly translated to peace, prosperity and harmony, can be defined as the practices of having a balanced well-being in terms of this topic or even co-existing with common shared values and prosperity. It is argued that Sejahtera embodies the achievement of a quality of life that is both sustainable and balanced as a way of life at the same time. The idea of Sejahtera must be common to IIUM students since it is always stressed to all of its students by our new Rector of the Internat...

SEJAHTERA: THE CONTEXT OF BALANCING

Assalamualaikum, Last week, my classmates and I were assigned to watch a talk on Youtube about Sejahtera given by Prof  Tan Sri Dzukifli Abdul Razak. The talk was uploaded by TEDxTalks which is a very famous online talks organization. I honestly had a big expectation since it was published by TED, not to mention it was delivered by an optimistic Malaysian. At the start of the video, the speaker told us about how the word Sejahtera is used everyday but we are not sure whether it is well rooted as far as the word means to us. When I heard this, I start wondering how deep this word could means. So, I took out a pen and piece of paper and started to write down an important information from this talk. Basically, Sejahtera means  prosperity .  Sejahtera is all about balanced holistically or sustainable . Sejahtera is defined as  SPICES  where  'S'  is for  spiritually balance, 'P' is for physically balance, 'I' is for...

ISLAM & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Assalamualaikum, In the second session of lecture, we learned about Islam and Sustainable Development. Frankly speaking, his topic discusses Sustainable Development from the viewpoint of Islam and what we should do to accomplish the SDGs as a Muslim. As a matter of fact, what is missing in the SDGs is often clarified and can be strengthened for the peace of human life. At the beginning of the class, we have been introduced to something missing in  Sustainable Development Goals which is spiritual. This things could be prove by looking at South Korea.  They managed to record different accomplishments for their country. In 2018, they managed to report a GDP of 1,619 trillion and according to the OECD, they are now one of the best healthcare services in the world and ranked by Bloomberg as the second most powerful healthcare system. South Korea, though, remains the country with the highest suicide rate among the participants of the OECD, considering all these ac...

INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Assalamualaikum and welcome to this blog, my journey in this subject started when my friends and I were told to add credit hour in order to reach minimum credit hour set by our Kuliyyah. So, we tried to find any subject that available for us until we found UNGS 1201 Sustainable Development: Issues, Policies and Practices. I just wanted to know what Sustainable Development is all about as I attended the first class for this subject that was hosted through the Google Meet website. When I got to know Dr. Atiah Binti Abdullah Sidek, my very happy and caring lecturer, I could sense that this class will be interesting. Dr. Atiah asked us a question which shocked us, "Do you feel that this subject is important to you?". I just stayed silent and let my other colleagues answer the question. Most members of the class have claimed that they were confused about the matter. Our lecturer began the lecture after that by explaining a bit about Sustainable Development. I learned during the cl...
